About

Welcome to Kauri room. We offer gift ideas with sewing patterns for little children.

Kauri TreeYou might be expecting a baby and want to make hand-made accessories for your baby. You might be a grandmother of little ones who loves sewing and is looking for some ideas with patterns to sew. You might be a friend of someone who wants to make a gift to a friend who is having a baby. We would love to share our ideas of hand-made gifts with all of you!

Making gifts by hand usually takes time, however, if you're making a gift for someone who is special to you, time doesn't matter. People can feel your heart and appreciate your dedication making that gift whenever they see and use it. I hope your special gift will become an heirloom and will bring joy to other tiny ones with a memory of you with your love & passion.

The name of Kauri room comes from the Kauri tree that we can see from our workroom. Our special Kiwi friend, Annie, who used to sew all her children's clothes pointed out that we can see the lovely New Zealand native Kauri tree from the room. One day, we found a nest with chicks on the top of the tree after hearing birds singing & flying over the tree every morning. The chicks were looked after by their parents with love in their nest in the top of the Kauri tree and flew out once they became capable to feed & fend for themselves to explore their world now.

We wish your little ones will grow up with a lot of love like a Kauri tree, slowly and steadily step by step, surrounded by warm-hearted people.

Heirloom Blanket wih Rabbit Embroidery

Annie has kindly shared  her 80+ years old heirloom cot blanket with us, which was made by her mother. The rabbits were beautifully embroidered by hand.

Annie grew up at a farm in Taranaki with two other siblings. Her mother made all her children’s clothes and mended whenever needed. She used good natural materials for their clothes and then re-used good parts of the materials to make new clothes for the children again.
Many of you have heard similar stories to hers from your family and relatives.

Cherishing your clothes and belongings
It is not a long time ago that every mother would sew and knit for her family and everyone looked after their belongings. Mothers would choose good materials, preferably all natural fabrics for their children and make clothes for them. All siblings shared the clothes or passed them down to the younger siblings.
The materials were expensive and valuable at the time and children were taught to look after their clothes. They have grown up seeing their mother cutting fabric and sewing up their clothes and the mother mended again and again if there was a hole or tear. Hand- knitted cardigan was unpicked and yarn was straightened through steam from boiled water in the pot to re-make a new jumper when it got too small. The environment taught the children to cherish their belongings, such as clothes.
We encourage everyone to create the same environment like our grandmother or great grandmother would create for us so that our children will learn to take care of their belongings with memory of their family.

We have to change our “throwaway society. It is important to teach the next generation early on, what we should value and what should care about and to look after each and everyone who is sharing the space we live in on the planet so that we do not cause further harm.
